My friend, Elizabeth, brought a wonderful pattern into the shop the other day. It was a feminine dress that I would actually want to wear. It looked to be well designed and the pattern guide was extremely well thought out. I was thrilled to see such an inspiring pattern. Ojective: Make a simple and trendy knit scarf to keep you warm through the winter months.

Objective: For those who have a sewing machine but aren’t sure how to use it, or those who just need a refresher, this is the class for you. In this class you will learn things from threading the machine, to dealing with troublesome tension.

It just wouldn't be Christmas without the Festival of Trees. I have been involved with Festival since I was 13 years old. I love going every year and seeing the the incredible work that goes into this great cause. It always puts me in the Christmas spirit. Yellow Bird Fabrics donated a sewing tree. It is decorated with all kinds of fun sewing notions. It comes with a vintage sewing machine, an adorable apron made by my adorable mother and a gift certificate to Yellow Bird. I hope you all take the opportunity to go to the Festival of Trees tomorrow. Tickets are only $5 and all of the proceeds go toPrimary Children's Medical Center.

Soiree 2011

The Salt Lake Association of Fashion Designers www.slafd.com and The Hive Gallery www.hivegalleryslc.com present Soiree 2011, a fashion weekend and Runway event being held at Trolley Square Mall Nov. 19th and 20th.

This is Salt Lake's largest public fashion event with booths of local fashion boutiques, photographers, and hair salons!

The Soiree Fashion Show (Saturday night 6pm - 9pm) will begin with Style Wars: Polka Dots! Our 3rd annual local fashion designing contest, sponsored by The Humane Society of Utah. This whimsical showcase brings awareness of pet adoption to the masses in a way that is entertaining and fun!

Amy Royer, who won the competition last year, said "this was a unique experience to be able to patricipate in an event that has such a worthy objective." Royer, a professional designer that operates a specialty boutique, Yellow Bird Fabrics, in Salt Lake City, feels very commited to the theme of the competition owing to the fact that a number of years ago her grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer. "They removed one of my grandmother's breasts so that she could survive and this made an impact on me and my family." She added that she would return this year as a sponsor. It gives her an opportunity to share information about preventitive exams and the fight against breast cancer.

Leena inspired me to make this dress last fall. As sewing projects often go, it got put on the back burner until recently. It is finally finished just in time for this fall. It is made from a beautiful wool crepe that we have for sale here at the store. The photo above does not show the detail on the sleeve and belt so here is a close up photo of the belt. The belt is made from the same wool crepe, but there is a sewn in interfacing called "Texture Magic." When you apply steam to the Texture Magic, it shrinks up and gives you a unique textured effect.

All week long Amber and I were teaching a fashion workshop at Higher Ground Learning. I am so proud of these 15 young students. They are incredibly creative and talented! Each of them made a shirt, a skirt, a purse, and a pair of shoes. If anyone knows any 12 to 18 year old students that are interested in fashion, this workshop would be great for them. Saturday, I had the opportunity to meet some prospective students in the new Fashion Marketing program at the Art Institute. I will be teaching there in the fall and I am looking forward to having another fashion program in Utah. I think it will be a great addition to Salt Lake's growing fashion community.

Finally, today, Happy Father's day. I would like to give a big thanks to my dad. He has been such a great support to me and Yellow Bird Fabrics. I love you Dad!

Some people have expressed interest in learning how to make their own ballet flats. We are offering a class on Monday, May 16th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. For those of you who can't come, here is a little tutorial. I hope it helps.
First things first, get your materials. You can choose a contrasting fabric for the lining of the shoe if you'd like.
The interfacing that I chose to use wasn't very stiff but it is water resistant.
The sole of the shoe is made from a very thick vinyl. You could also use a heavy leather if you'd like. It should be about the same size and shape of your foot.
Cut your three fabrics into a horseshoe shape about a 3/4" longer than the length of your foot. Layer them interfacing first, then the lining, then place the fabric that will go on the outside of the shoe upside down so the right sides are together. Sew them all together with a 1/4" seam allowance along the inside of the horseshoe. Clip the curved part of the seam allowance.

Turn the shoe so the right sides are facing out.
Press.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the back side of the heel.

Cut a 3" strip of elastic and pin it along the top of the heel.
Sew the elastic on while stretching it.
Turn the shoe right sides out again.
Sew a basting stitch along the top curve of the shoe.
Gather your basting stitch.
Pin the top of the shoe to the soul right sides together.
Sew them together with a 1/4" seam allowance.
Trim the seam to 1/8".
Zigzag or serge together.
Turn right sides out.
Hooray! You have shoes!
